Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - With the bats roaring in both ends of their doubleheader on Saturday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, the Kane County Cougars pulled off a pair of victories by defeating the Beloit Snappers in 4-3 and 7-4 contests.
Albert Almora was involved for the Cougars (23-24) in all of the offense during the opening game. Almora doubled in his first at-bat but was stranded at third. In the third inning, Almora reached on an error by third baseman Renato Nunez and scored on a throwing error by first baseman Matt Olson.
At that point, the Cougars trailed 2-1, but Almora helped the club tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Oliver Zapata started the inning with a single and advanced to third on Pin-Chieh Chen's base hit. Almora drove a double into the left-center field gap to bring home both runners, evening the game at 3-3.
Jose Rosario started for the Cougars and coughed up three runs (two earned) on five hits over 4.1 innings. Nathan Dorris (2-2) worked the rest of the game while shutting out Beloit (28-21) on two hits. In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars pushed home the winning run as Almora singled and took third on a Dan Vogelbach double. Two batters later, Bijan Rademacher's deep flyout to center, scored Almora with the game-winner.
In game two, Nunez put the Snappers on the board initially by cracking a two-run homer, but the Cougars bounced back right away again. Vogelbach doubled home Almora in the bottom of the first. Zapata's two-run double in the second gave the Cougars a 3-2 advantage. Zapata then scored on an error to make it a two-run cushion.
Brian Smith worked four frames to start the nightcap, but he coughed up a pair of game-tying runs in the top of the third. Rock Shoulders made sure the ballgame didn't stay tied for long as he blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the third before launching a two-run jack in the bottom of the fifth against Austin House (0-4). Ian Dickson (2-2) relieved Smith and tossed three scorless innings while allowing just one hit.
The Cougars and Snappers will play game three of their four-game set on Sunday night at 6:30 from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Right-hander Tayler Scott (2-1) starts for the Cougars against fellow righty Raul Alcantara (5-1). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
