Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. - The Kernels attempted to rally several times on Saturday night, but ultimately lost 6-3 to the Burlington Bees. The Kernels have now lost four straight games.
Burlington quickly rattled Kernels starter Jose Berrios in the 1st inning as the Bees struck for 3 runs. Seven batters came to the plate in the frame. The Bees' runs were a result of 2 hits, an error, and a double steal. The key sequence in the inning was with 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd - Berrios was able to induce Brennan Gowens into a routine grounder to second but Candido Pimentel bobbled the ball and couldn't make the play.
Berrios limited the damage following the opening inning, but Bees second baseman Kevin Moesquit connected for a 2-out RBI double to increase the Bees lead, 4-0, in the 4th.
The Kernels were able to push across their first run in the 7th when Jhonatan Arias beat out a grounder to third for an RBI single.
In the 8th, the Kernels began to rally and narrowed the deficit to 4-3. Byron Buxton, Candido Pimentel, and Jorge Polanco all reached base to lead off the inning. Buxton scored on Polanco's grounder to second and Pimentel touched home on an infield RBI single by Tyler Grimes.
Burlington responded by tacking on 2 more runs in the top of the 9th off Josue Montanez, all with 2 outs. Jonathan Walsh hit a line smash single to left center to drive in Sherman Johnson and Kyle Johnson.
Before Montanez, the Kernels bullpen was flawless. Matthew Tomshaw and Tyler Jones threw hitless innings in the 7th and 8th, respectively.
Berrios (3-2) finished with 5 innings to his name, yielding 5 runs on 9 hits while walking 1 and striking out 8.
Bees starter Ryan Crowley didn't allow a hit until Polanco's double in the 4th. Crowley (4-1) pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3.
