Burlington Bees News Release

Ryan Crowley delivered six scoreless innings, and the Burlington Bees took advantage of a big error in the first to defeat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 6-3 on Saturday night at Perfect Game Field.

The Bees (17-26) continue to make games interesting against the Kernels (30-17), but for at least one night, the Bees came out victorious. Burlington took advantage of a big error by Candido Pimentel in the top of the first to score three unearned runs and hand the Kernels their fourth straight loss.

Sherman Johnson singled to start the game and advanced to third on a double by Kyle Johnson. Jose Berrios (3-2) struck out Wade Hinkle and Jonathan Walsh, and looked like he was going to get out of the jam. Brennan Gowens hit a routine ground ball to Pimentel, who bobbled the ball, allowing Kyle Johnson to score. Kyle Johnson scored when the next batter, Chevy Clarke, delivered a single to put runners at the corners with two outs. Clarke stole second and on the throw to second, Gowens executed a double steal, scoring the third run of the inning.

After extending the lead to 4-0 in the fourth, the Bees were cruising thanks to Ryan Crowley (4-1). The southpaw threw six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two hits, while striking out three.

The Kernels would not go away, scoring an unearned run in the seventh and two unearned runs in the eighth. Eduard Santos committed two throwing errors, one in each inning and Kevin Moesquit bobbled a ball in the eighth, which helped the Kernels pull within one.

Jonathan Walsh would not let the Bees go down with a loss, delivering a two-run single in the top of the ninth to extend the Bees lead to 6-3.

Kurt Spomer put two men on in the bottom of the ninth, but he got Dalton Hicks to ground out and in the process, Spomer earned his first professional save.

The Bees will face the Kernels at 2:05 p.m. on Sunday, as Alex Keudell will take the mound for Burlington opposite of Brett Lee. You can listen to all the action on News Radio 1490 KBUR or gobees.com.
