Lansing Lugnuts News Release
South Bend, Ind. - Daniel Watts shut down the Lansing Lugnuts (21-24) and snapped the team's eight-game winning streak, leading the South Bend Silver Hawks (30-16) to a 7-0 victory at Stanley Coveleski Stadium on Saturday night.
Watts (Win, 7-1) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and tossed seven scoreless innings in total, earning his league-leading seventh win of the season. He allowed just two hits, the first of which came off the bat of Lugnuts' shortstop Jorge Flores with one out in the sixth. Watts issued two walks and struck out four.
The loss is the first for Lansing since a 13-4 defeat at the hands of the Great Lakes Loons on May 15th.
South Bend's 4-5-6-7 combination in the lineup of Brandon Drury, Alex Glenn, Carter Bell and Rudy Flores did most of the dirty work offensively, combining to go 9-for-14 at the plate, driving in five of the seven runs and scoring four of them.
On the mound for the Lugnuts, Javier Avendano (Loss, 4-3) pitched four innings, allowing three runs on four hits, but only one of those runs was earned. Avendano struck out for Silver Hawks bats and issued a pair of walks.
In the loss, Lansing's Gustavo Pierre was 1-for-2 with a double and drew his first walk of the season in his 40th game played.
Game two of the three-game series is set for a 2:05 p.m. first pitch on Sunday afternoon. Lansing will send left-hander Alonzo Gonzalez (2-3, 5.62) to the mound to take on South Bend's right-hander Brandon Sinnery (1-2, 2.25).
