West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - Yorfrank Lopez and Brennan Smith combined to allow just one run as the Whitecaps took advantage of several offensive opportunities in a 6-1 victory over Lake County. West Michigan (22-24) has won consecutive games for the first time since May 15 and 16.
Lopez started the game and allowed just one run on five hits with no walks over six innings. Smith, who is a native of northern Ohio, earned a three-inning save by retiring nine of the ten batters he faced. A one-out walk in the ninth inning was the only blemish on his pitching line.
West Michigan scored in each of the first three innings on a groundout by Jeff Holm that followed a walk and a single in the first, a two-out home run by Adolfo Reina in the second, then on errors on consecutive ground balls, followed by Lance Durham's RBI single in the third. The result was a 4-0 lead.
Lake County's only run came in the bottom of the third when Anthony Santander led off with a single and LeVon Washington drove a one-out RBI triple just inches over the glove of Jeff Holm, who leapt at first base.
Lopez struck out five and improved to 5-2. Reina finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Jared Reaves delivered an RBI double in the seventh inning as part of a two-run rally for the Whitecaps.
Captains' starter Robbie Aviles (1-1) took the loss, but left the game due to an injury in the top of the second. Michael Peoples, who piggybacks with Aviles as a starter in the Lake County rotation, pitched 4.1 innings of relief and did not allow an earned run.
The Whitecaps continue their six-game road trip with the second game of the three-game series against the Captains on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. RHP Endrys Briceno (0-3, 5.79) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against RHP Jake Sisco (1-3, 3.83) of the Captains. The next home game at Fifth Third Ballpark will be the extremely popular Dime Dog Night on Tuesday, May 28 at 6:35 p.m. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
