Kane County Cougars News Release
Davenport, IA- Kane County Cougars shortstop Gregorio Petit smacked two home runs, had four hits and drove in all three runs for his team on Friday night, but it wasn't enough for a win. The Swing of the Quad Cities came back and grabbed a 4-3 win in 10 innings at John O'Donnell Stadium.
After Cougars starter Ryan Ford gave up a run the opening inning, an 80-minute rain delay interrupted the action in the second and forced both bullpens to take over. Swing starter Nick Webber left, reliever Jason Cairns entered and Petit crushed a solo homer to begin the third and tie the score, 1-1.
The tie remained until the ninth, thanks to stellar relief pitching by Kane County lefty Trent Peterson, who tossed six shutout frames, gave up two hits, walked one and fanned four. Petit became the fourth Cougar this year to produce multiple homers in one game by blasting a two-out, two-run shot in the top of the ninth for a 3-1 advantage. Dan Fyvie and Mike Mitchell each gave up a run in the bottom half, however, and the ballgame went to a 10th inning.
Southpaw Derek Tharpe (2-7) became the losing pitcher after serving up a walk-off round-tripper to Cody Palmer for a disappointing 4-3 loss. The Cougars had scoring chances earlier in the game, and the loss prevented them from getting to within one game of first place and keeping control of the second spot in the Western Division playoff race. Instead, the Cougars drop half a game behind Beloit. Mike Sillman (7-2) took home the win for Quad Cities.
The Cougars (30-29) and Swing (33-26) are set for a doubleheader that begins on Saturday afternoon at 5 CDT. Mike Rogers (6-7, 5.00) will pitch in game one against right-hander Matt Scherer (9-7, 3.68), and Ryan Webb (5-11, 4.63) tosses for Kane County in the second part against Tyler Adamczyk (3-3, 7.47) for Quad Cities. Both contests are seven-inning affairs.
