Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING - Russ Savickas(6-6) struck out a season-high nine batters and allowed a run in seven innings as the Lugnuts(64-65, 27-33) won their fifth straight game to move within five games of Southwest Michigan(65-64, 32-28) as they posted a 3-1 win in front of 7,614 fans at Oldsmobile Park on Friday evening.

The Lugnuts jumped to the early lead off Devil Rays starter Eddie De La Cruz(6-4), scoring twice in the first. Christian Snavely drew a one-out walk, went to second on a single by Eric Nielsen and scored on a double by Charlie Anderson. David Hicks followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Nielsen and make it 2-0.

In the third, the Devil Rays struck for their lone run, getting a sacrifice fly from Fernando Perez to plate Tommy Nichols. The Lugnuts, however, repsonded with an RBI infield single by Aaron Mathews in the bottom of the frame to return to the two-run edge on what turned out to be the game's final run.

Savickas allowed a leadoff single to Chris Nowak in the fourth and then issued a walk to Patrick Breen, but then retired the next 12 hitters he faced to earn the impressive win. In his longest outing of the year, Savickas fanned four of the final six hitters he faced.

Aaron Tressler was equally as impressive, retiring all six batters he faced over the final two innings to pick up his second save. Tressler fanned three of the six batters, including getting Breen to swing and miss to end the game.

De La Cruz didn't pitch poorly, but got no offensive support to take the loss. The Devil Ray bullpen efforts of Chris Mason and Ryan Bitter shutout the Lugnuts over the final five innings while allowing only two hits.

The Lugnuts will aim to win their sixth straight game and move within four games of the Devil Rays as they host Southwest Michigan at 7:05 p.m. Danny Core(6-9) will get the nod for the Lugnuts while lefty Jarrad Lavergne(5-9) will take the hill for the Devil Rays.
