West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

PEORIA, IL - Josh Rainwater pitched five shutout innings in his first full-length start since a blister developed on his pitching finger last month as West Michigan shutout Peoria, 8-0.

The victory reduces the Whitecaps magic number to clinch a playoff berth to 3. In the race for the top seed in the Eastern Division's second half race, the magic number is down to 8, thanks to a loss by Southwest Michigan at Lansing, 3-1.

Rainwater issued no walks, allowed five hits and struck out five to earn his first win since July 5 at Quad Cities. Lavon Lewis (two innings), Kevin Ardoin and Kevin Whelan (one inning each) combined with Rainwater on the shutout.

The Whitecaps stole four bases in five attempts off Peoria starter Grant Johnson, who was chased form the game in the sixth inning. He allowed six runs (5 earned) in 4.2 innings of work.

Nick McIntyre went 4-for-5, including a two-run single in the fourth inning, which made the lead 4-0. Luis Sabino and Brent Dlugach each hit their fifth home runs of the season.

Sabino's blast to right in the fifth made the score 6-0. The Whitecaps took an 8-0 advantage on the shot by Dlugach in the ninth.

Jeff Frazier knocked his Midwest League-leading 42nd double of the year in the first. He scored on an error by shortstop Joe Sinokaitis who was simultaneously dodging a splintered bat while trying to field a ground ball from Wilkin Ramirez.
