
Whitecaps rough up Chiefs 8-0

Peoria, IL- The West Michigan Whitecaps scored in bunches Friday night for a 8-0 win of the Peoria Chiefs at O'Brien Field. With the loss in front of 6,543 fans, the Chiefs fall to 28-32 on the half and into a tie for fourth place in the wild card race behind Kane County, Beloit and Cedar Rapids.
The Whitecaps pushed across an unearned run against Chiefs starter Grant Johnson in the 1st inning. With two outs, Jeff Frazier doubled to left-center. Wilkin Ramirez grounded to short and when the ball went through Joe Simokaitis' legs, Frazier scored easily for the 1-0 lead.
The game stayed 1-0 into the 4th though the Chiefs did have chances against West Michigan starter Josh Rainwater. They left two on base in the 2nd inning and Sam Fuld was thrown out at the plate in the 3rd.
West Michigan extended their lead in the 4th inning. Johnson walked the first two batters and uncorked a wild pitch to put runners at second and third with nobody out. After a groundout, Steve Young singled in a run and Nick McIntyre singled home two for a 3-0 Whitecaps lead.
In the 5th inning, Johnson issued a two out walk to Brent Dlugach. Luis Sabino followed with a two-run homer into the Pepsi Picnic Plaza for a 6-0 West Michigan lead. The homer was the fifth of the year for Sabino and just the 61st for West Michigan, the lowest team total in the league. Dlugach hit his 5th homer of the season in the 8th to cap the scoring at 8-0.
Johnson (3-7) allowed five earned runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out six and issued two walks. Alfredo Francisco relieved and tossed 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball while striking out three. Newcomer Jeff Teasley allowed two runs on two hits on two innings of work. Pepsi Player of the Game
Sam Fuld (CF) - Fuld was 2-for-5 with a stolen base. The centerfielder now has three straight multi-hit games and four in his last five. He is now batting .300 on the season for the first time. Notes... Eric Patterson was 2-for-4 on the night and now has 144 hits on the season, two shy of the top 10 Chiefs single season list...Fuld has six hits in the series...Peoria was 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position...The Chiefs were last shutout August 7th at Clinton...Game time is Saturday is 6:30 PM as the Chiefs have Jesse Estrada on the hill...The Sky Dogs will perform during the game and there will be a post-game fireworks show...All the action can be heard on WOAM 1350 AM or www.peoriachiefs.com.
