Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (August 26, 2005) The Burlington Bees (28-32, 58-72) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and had the bases loaded when the final out was recorded as the Cedar Rapids Kernels (29-31, 63-67) hung on to win 7-6 tonight at Community Field. The Bees have lost seven in a row to match the team's longest losing streak of the season and trail the season series 7-5 to the Kernels.

The Kernels and Bees traded runs early in the game and the game was tied at two into the sixth inning when Kraig Schambough took over for starter Justin Sherman. Schambough hit Michael Collins with the first pitch and moved to second with a wild pitch. After a walk, Warner Madrigal laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. The Bees intentionally walked Richard Giannotti to load the bases for Jordan Renz. Renz hit a slow ground ball to Eddie Solis at third, Solis fielded the ball and threw to second for a force out, but the relay to first sailed wide allowing Renz to reach and Collins to score to put the Kernels ahead 3-2.

The Kernels added another run in the seventh on an RBI single by Collins, and three more in the eighth to extend the lead to 7-2. After getting the first out in the eighth, Schambough walked the next two batters before giving way to Adam Rowe. Renz greeted Rowe with a single to left to drive in a run and when Solis kicked the relay throw from the outfield, the runners advanced to second and third. Chris Walston followed with a single to right to drive in a second run, but Ed Lucas gunned down Renz at the plate for the second out of the inning. Lucas had moved out to right field in the sixth inning because Brian McFall was removed after getting hit by a pitch in the left wrist in the fourth. McFall also threw out to Renz at the plate in the fourth inning. After a walk to Sean Rodriguez, Nate Sutton lined a single to left that drove in Walston, but Rodriguez was thrown out trying to go to third to end the inning.

The Bees got one run back in the bottom of the eighth against TJ Stanton. Rusty Brown led off with a single. After a strikeout, Kenard Springer singled and Gary Perez doubled to right-center to drive in Brown, but Springer got caught in a rundown between third and home for the second out before the inning ended. Frederic DeLoizaga-Carney took over for the bottom of the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Darwinson Salazar, a triple to Geraldo Valentin, and a single to Ed Lucas for two runs before coming out of the game. Miguel Gonzalez took over and got soft lineouts from Damaso Espino and Brown, but Eddie Solis hit an 0-2 pitch for a double into the left-center field gap that broke an 0-35 slump and drove in Lucas to pull the Bees to within one. Springer reached on an infield single and Perez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Perez was hit hard enough on the left shoulder that he had to leave the game for a pinch-runner. Gonzalez ended the game by getting Cody Cure to ground out to shortstop and earned his second save in as many nights and his fifth of the year. Kernels' starter Karl Gelinas (9-8) worked six innings and allowed two runs for the win. Schambough (1-1) took the loss for the Bees.

The Bees and Kernels continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Luis Cota (5-7, 4.07) will start for the Bees against RH Nick Green (3-2, 3.40) for the Kernels. The gates will open at 6:00 for a Wendy's Family Night and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
