Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL – The Kane County Cougars held a 2-1 advantage with two outs in the top of the sixth before the Lansing Lugnuts scored three runs and continued for a 5-3 win Saturday night in front of 9,238 fans at Elfstrom Stadium.

Lansing got a run in the first off Cougars starter Derek Tharpe when Curtis Thigpen singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball before coming home on a groundout for an unearned tally and a 1-0 game. The Cougars responded in the their half of the first as well. Kevin Melillo walked and Ryan Ruiz singled before both men advanced on an errant pick-off throw by Lansing's starter Kyle Yates. Javier Herrera walked to load the bases and Raul Padron got a free pass to tie the game 1-1. Myron Leslie followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 game.

The score remained as both starters settled down. Tharpe didn't allow a hit after the first until Lansing's rally with two outs in the sixth. Four straight base knocks led to a three-run frame and an advantage the Lugnuts never relinquished. The Cougars managed a run in the seventh on Melillo's RBI single that scored Tommy Everidge from third to make it 4-3. Keith Perez had 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Clay Tichota struck out the only man he faced to end the eighth before Rob Semerano allowed a ninth-inning run for the 5-3 final.

Tharpe (1-3) took the loss with six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits, walking two and fanning five. Yates (3-3) got the win after five innings. Joey McLaughlin got his second save. Game three of the series is Sunday night at 6 CDT. Jared Trout (0-1, 2.15) pitches for the Cougars (20-28) against Russ Savickas (0-0, 0.00) for Lansing (26-22).
