Dayton Dragons News Release

Burlington, IA– The Dayton Dragons (20-28) were no hit into the seventh inning but managed to scratch together three runs to tie up the Burlington Bees (22-26) 3-3, only to lose the ball game on a walk off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the 4-3 win, the Bees have taken the first two games of the three game series against the Dragons and have tied the all time series between the two teams at 23-23.

Former Reds farmhand Alan Moye got the Bees on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a wind aided HR off Dayton starter Camilo Vazquez (ND) that hugged the right field line and just cleared the 16 foot high fence for a 1-0 Burlington lead. Ed Lucas followed the Moye homer with a single to left centerfield. Lucas stole second, advanced to third on a sac bunt and scored on an RBI groundout for a 2-0 Bees advantage through two innings.

Billy Bucker (ND), the second Kansas City Royals draft choice from the University of South Carolina the Dragons have seen in consecutive night in this series (Matt Campbell), tied Dayton in knots. The right hander no-hit the Dragons through 6.1 innings before Jeremiah Piepkorn broke up the no hitter with a double to left.

Burlington added another run off Vazquez in the fourth inning as the combination of Moye and Lucas struck again. With one down, Moye drew a walk off Vazquez and sprinted home on an RBI triple to the gap in right center from Lucas to extend the lead to 3-0.

Vazquez lasted 5.0 innings for the Dragons allowing three runs on three hits. The southpaw struck out four and walked two before departing in favor of Josh Thigpen (ND) to start the sixth inning.

The Dragons broke up the no hitter with one out in the seventh inning on back to back extra base hits. Piepkorn's double marked the first time in the game Dayton had a runner past first base. Tonys Gutierrez followed with a triple over the bag at first into the bullpen in right and the Dayton was on the board at 3-1. Buckner was lifted in favor of Kyle Crist (WP, 3-0) out of the Burlington bullpen. Bobby Mosby was the first hitter Crist would face and he had the Dayton slugger down 0-2 before uncorking a wild pitch that scored Gutierrez from third with the second run of the inning to get Dayton within one at 3-2.

The Dragons tied the game off Crist in the eight on a double and a Bees error. Drew Anderson slapped a double the opposite way past a drawn in Mario Lisson at third. Kenard Springer tried to cut down Anderson at second base and air mailed the throw into foul ground on the first base side. Anderson scored on the two base error to tie the game at 3-3.

With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Alexander Farfan (LP, 1-3) gave up a lead off single to Moye, who was moved to second with a sac bunt. With two down the Dragons intentionally walked Miguel Vega to pitch to .149 hitting Robert Grana. Grana was lifted for pinch hitter Eddie Solis who wasn't statistically much better at .196. Farfan walked the pinch hitter to load the bases and then surrendered the game winning hit to Irving Falu to give Burlington the 4-3 win.

The Dragons continue the four game series with the Burlington Bees at Community Field in Burlington, Iowa Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries Friday's game live beginning with the pre game show at 2:30 PM. The Dragons will throw LHP Philippe Valiquette, while the Bees counter with RHP Luis Cota.
