Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - Burlington Bees starter Billy Buckner pitched 6.1 innings of no-hit baseball, but it took Irving Falu's walk-off single with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the Bees (22-26) at 4-3 win over the Dayton Dragons (20-28) at Community Field tonight. The Bees have taken the first two games of this series and have evened the all-time series with Dayton at 23-23 since the Dragons joined the Midwest League in 2000.
The Bees got off to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. Alan Moye led off with a solo homer that slid just inside the foul pole down the right field line. It was Moye's third homer of the year to tie Brian McFall for the team lead. Ed Lucas followed with a single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kenard Springer, and scored on a groundout by Miguel Vega. The Bees added a third run in the bottom of the fourth when Moye walked and scored on a triple by Lucas. All three runs came against LH Camilo Vazquez who worked five innings tonight.
Meanwhile, Buckner was cruising out on the mound. After a two-out walk to John Purdom in the second, Buckner retired the next 14 in a row before Jeremiah Piepkorn doubled in the seven to break up the no-hit bid. Tonys Gutierrez followed it up with a triple down the right field line to drive in a run and knocked Buckner out of the ballgame. Kyle Crist took over on the mound for his first appearance since April 19th after coming off the disabled list on Wednesday. Crist threw a wild pitch that allowed Guiterrez to score before getting out of the inning with a groundout and a strikeout. In the top of the eighth, Drew Anderson led off with a hit down the left field line. Anderson rounded first and headed for second. Springer came up throwing from left, but airmailed Falu at second and the ball rolled all the way to the tarp allowing Anderson to score the tying run. Crist got three straight groundouts to end the inning and pitched a scoreless ninth.
Alexander Farfan took over on the mound for the Dragons in the bottom of the ninth after Josh Thigpen tossed three scoreless innings. Moye led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lucas. After Springer grounded out, the Dragons intentionally walked Miguel Vega and then walked pinch-hitter Eddie Solis to load the bases. Falu then hit the first pitch on a line into left field for the game-winning hit that brought in Moye for the third time in the game. Farfan (1-3) gets the loss while Crist (3-0) picks up the win.
The Bees have a chance to match their longest winning streak of the year as they go for three in a row tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. RH Luis Cota (2-2, 1.95) will pitch for the Bees against LH Phillippe Valiquette (0-3, 5.68) for the Dragons. The game starts at 2:00 and the gates open at 1:00 for a Louisa Communications Kids Day. All Little Leaguers and Boy and Girl Scouts in uniform get in free, a church bulletin gets $2 off admission for each member of your family, and kids can run the bases after the game. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40. After the game, join the Bees at Carlos O'Kelly's for the second edition of "Bees Monthly" to be broadcast live on The Ticket 1360 from 7:00-7:30.
