Peoria Chiefs News Release
Clinton, IAâ Sam Fuld's two run single with two outs in the 8th gave the Peoria Chiefs a 6-4 win over the Clinton LumberKings Saturday night at Alliant Energy Field. With the win the Chiefs move to 24-25 and knock Clinton from first place.
Josh Arteaga and Bo Flowers started the 8th inning by drawing back to back walks. Alberto Garcia sacrificed back to pitcher John Lujan advancing Arteaga to third and Flowers to second. After Alan Rick struck out swinging, Fuld lined the first pitch into left field as Arteaga and Flowers both scored.
The LumberKings got on the board against Chiefs starter Jesse Estrada in the 2nd inning. With one out Andrew Wishy doubled to left-center and went to third on a basehit by Emerson Frostad. Iac Gac gave Clinton a 1-0 lead with a sharp single into left. Estrada struck out Brandon Boggs with the bases loaded and then retired Brandon Cashman to get out of the inning.
The Chiefs tied the game with an unearned run in the 3rd inning against Clinton starter Ace Walker. With two outs, Ryan Harvey hit grounder on the left side and Frostad threw high to first allowing Harvey to reach. Luis Montanez followed with a RBI triple to right-center to tie the game before Josh Arteaga popped up to end the inning.
Clinton regained the lead against Estrada with three hits in the bottom of the 3rd. Lizahio Baez led off with a double and scored on a double by the next batter Adam Fox. Estrada struck out two of the next three batters but a single by Gac brought home Fox for a 3-1 LumberKings lead.
The LumberKings added a run in the 6th against reliever Walt Nolen and would have scored more if not for a great defensive play. With one out, Nolen walked Baez and Fox back to back. Kevin Richardson was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Baez scored on a wild pitch to give Clinton a 4-1 lead. With one out and runners on second and third, Wishy flew out to center and Fuld came up throwing as Fox tagged up. The throw was a strike and Alan Rick held on through a violent collision with Fox to end the inning.
Peoria rallied to tie the game in the 7th as Rick drew a one out walk from Walker and Fuld followed with a single to right. After a flyout, Aaron Sisk battled though eight pitches before lining into the right-center gap. Rick and Fuld both scored and Sisk slid into third with his first triple of the season. John Lujan relieved Walker and gave up a game-tying triple to Harvey. Montanez then drove a ball to the wall in center but Cashman jumped, caught the ball and held on after slamming off the wall to end the inning.
Walt Nolen (4-2) picked up the win by not allowing a hit in two innings of work. He did walk three, hit a batter and allow a run but pitched out of a jam in the 6th and earned the win. Paul Schappert threw a perfect 8th inning and Jerry Blevins. Estrada threw five innings allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking two. He left trailing 3-1 and took a no-decision.
