West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - Luis Sabino doubled, scored, had an RBI and made a diving catch in right field to save a run but the story for the Whitecaps for a second straight day was the pitching staff in a 3-0 shutout of Fort Wayne.
Josh Rainwater started and threw five innings. He was followed by Ed Clelland, Anthony Tomey, Ian Ostlund and Collin Mahoney, who each chipped in with a scoreless inning of relief. Mahoney finished the game and earned his tenth save.
For the second day in a row, the Whitecaps beat a Wizards pitcher with a lofty win-loss record. Clayton Hamilton was 7-1 going into the game and had not lost since his first start on April 8 in Lansing. He is now 0-1 in two starts against West Michigan.
On Friday, the Whitecaps saddled Mike Ekstrom (6-1) with his first loss. Wilkin Ramirez doubled to lead off the second and scored on a ground out by Sabino for a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Ramierz walked then came home on a double by Brent Dlugach. Sabino doubled to lead off the seventh and crossed the plate when Justin Justice singled to right.
Mahoney allowed a hit and a walk to start the ninth, but Chris Kolkhorst lined to third to start a double play, as Matt Bush was out at second before he could return to the bag. That play set up a ground out by Brett Dowdy to end the game. It was the second shutout win of the season for the Whitecaps. The other was Tuesday against Dayton.
