Kane County Cougars News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - For the second time in as many nights, the Kane County Cougars plated a pair of runs in the very first inning and ran their record to 16-0 when scoring first in a game as they bested the Quad Cities River Bandits 4-1.
The Cougars struck early when a Matt Ray triple tallied Shane Keough who had walked to open the game. Ray later scored when Corey Brown doubled and Kane County led 2-0.
The Bandits had the tying runs in scoring position in the sixth but reliever Justin Friend coaxed Matt Arburr into grounding out ending the threat.
The Cougars increased their lead to 3-0 in the seventh when Matt Smith opened the frame with a triple off the top of the wall and scored a moment later on a passed ball.
Quad Cities finally broke through scoring a single run in the eighth when Jose Garcia walked to begin the inning and then scored when Charlie Kingrey tripled. Kane County cemented the win scoring an insurance run in the ninth as Shane Keough hit Bandits pitcher Cardoza Tucker Jr. in the leg with a one-hopper with the bases loaded. Tucker recovered in time to throw Keough out at first but Matt Smith was able to score from third to make it 4-1.
Jamie Richmond grabbed his third win of the year pitching five and two-thirds innings and retiring, at one point, eleven of thirteen batters. Justin Friend finished the contest and recorded his third save. Cougars pitchers combined to strike out ten Bandit hitters. The series resumes Saturday night at 6 PM when Travis Banwart opposes the Bandits Mark Diapoules in a battle of right-handers.
