Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits were quiet offensively yet again on Friday night, dropping their fifth straight game in a 4-1 loss to the Kane County Cougars at Modern Woodmen Park.
Quad Cities (16-16) has scored just five runs on 21 hits during the five-game skid, having been outscored by their opponents, 39-5. Kane County (22-10) got out to an early lead and never looked back, as Jamie Richmond tossed 5.2 scoreless frames for the win.
For the second straight night, Kane County got on the board in the top of the first inning. After Shane Keough drew a walk to open the ballgame, Matt Ray sent a line drive into left field that forced Matt Arburr to fight the sun coming in. Arburr lunged at the ball at the last second, but it skipped by him and resulted in an RBI-triple. Later in the frame, Corey Brown brought Ray home on a double to left-center for a 2-0 Cougars' lead.
That score remained all the way until the seventh inning, when Matt Smith led off with a towering fly ball to left that bounced off the wall for a triple. Moments later Todd Johnson was at the plate when a passed ball eluded catcher Luis De La Cruz, allowing Smith to race home for a 3-0 score.
Richmond (3-2) took the win for the Cougars, scattering five hits over 5.2 shutout innings and fanning five. Justin Friend (3) went the rest of the way for the save, striking out five and holding the River Bandits to one run on one hit over 3.1 frames.
The River Bandits did not get on the board until the bottom of the eighth, sparked by a leadoff walk to Jose Garcia. There was one away when Charlie Kingrey clubbed a run-scoring triple to the gap in right-center, making it a 3-1 ballgame.
Kane County got the run right back in the top of the ninth, as Smith walked and scored on a groundout to reach the 4-1 final.
Brian Broderick (0-3) took the loss despite a solid outing. The only two runs against him came on the sun-aided triple in the first, as the right-hander from Arizona allowed three hits in four innings of work.
Meanwhile, Josh Wilson made his first appearance of the year as he works his way back from a shoulder injury that erased most of his last two seasons. The 21-year-old allowed two runs - one earned - on two hits in three innings, pitching for Quad Cities for the first time in exactly two years to the day.
