Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI -- Cedar Rapids Kernel starting pitcher Michael Anton allowed four hits and struck out eight to pick up a complete game shutout in a 5-0 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday night on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Rattler starter Michael Pineda, who pitched 6-1/3 scoreless innings, was not involved in the decision.
The Kernels (17-16) scored an unearned in the top of the seventh after Pineda left the game. Walter Suriel, in his Timber Rattler debut, hit Jay Brossman, the first batter he faced. He would get the second out on a grounder as Brossman took second base. A walk to Gordon Gronkowski and a stolen base by Brossman put runners at the corners with two out. Suriel got Angel Castillo to send a grounder to third, but Alex Liddi misplayed it into an error. Brossman scored to put the Kernels in front 1-0.
Wisconsin (12-18) appeared to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Gavin Dickey doubled to start the inning and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Joe Dunigan. Alex Liddi lifted a fly ball to medium left field. Dickey tagged and headed for home after the ball was caught by Jeremy Moore. Dickey slid to the back side of the plate as catcher Chris Rosenbaum bobbled the throw. Dickey celebrated as he headed to the Timber Rattler dugout, but plate umpire Brent Rice had not made a signal.
Rosenbaum tracked down the baseball, then tracked down Dickey. The tag was made and Dickey was ruled out to end the inning. Both Dickey and Liddi were eventually ejected from the game after arguing the call.
Cedar Rapids put four more runs on the board in the top of the eighth inning. Suriel loaded the bases on an error and two walks. Jose Escalona, making his 2008 debut with the Rattlers, entered and gave up a two-run single to Efren Navarro. A wild pitch and a balk would plate two more runs in the inning and the Kernels had a 5-0 lead.
Wisconsin had a chance to get on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Calvin Beamon tripled to start the frame and Blake Ochoa walked. But, Anton kept the shutout going with a fly ball to center that was too shallow for Beamon to score. Maximo Mendez lined into an unassisted double play to first.
Anton would give up a one-out double to Edilio Colina in the ninth, but he got the final two outs for his first professional shutout.
Game three of the series is set for Saturday afternoon. Juan Ramirez (0-2, 4.18) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Mason Tobin (2-1, 2.48) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 1:05pm.
