Cougars Drop Opener in Ohio

EASTLAKE, Ohio - The Kane County Cougars enjoyed a pair of leads on Tuesday night but ultimately fell, 9-4, against the Lake County Captains in the Cougars' first-ever game at Classic Park in northern Ohio. The Cougars' tandem of Leonel Santiago and newcomer Santiago Garrido served up four homers, and the Cougars were outhit 13-7. Julio Aparicio went 3-for-3 with his first homer in the loss.

Santiago (4-5) had thrown eight straight quality starts but gave up six runs on 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings in the loss. He entered the sixth with a 3-2 lead before the Captains rallied and knocked him out of the game following a three-run homer by Alex Lavisky. Then Garrido logged 2 2/3 innings and allowed back-to-back homers in the eighth for the 9-4 final.

The Cougars scored two quick runs off Cole Cook (2-5) for an early 2-0 lead. Aparicio doubled home Alex Llanos in the first, and Geulin singled in the second and later scored on a wild pitch. After the Captains tied the game in the third off Santiago, Cheslor Cuthbert gave the Cougars a 3-2 with a sixth-inning RBI single. Lake County put four runs in the bottom of the sixth and never looked back. Aparicio's homer in the eighth accounted for the Cougars' final run.

The Cougars (23-29) and Captains (24-28) continue the three-game set Wednesday at 10 a.m. CT. Yordano Ventura (0-1, 7.36) is scheduled to oppose Mike Goodnight (3-2, 2.60).
