Kane County Cougars News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Kane County Cougars knocked out 12 hits Thursday night but managed only two runs and stranded 12, losing, 5-2, against the Fort Wayne Wizards in front of 4,356 at Memorial Stadium. Jemile Weeks and Jake Smith each homered, but the offense missed other opportunities and starter Jamie Richmond had one bad inning that became the difference.

Richmond (6-8) had a shutout through three innings but served up four runs in the fourth inning as the Wizards batted around. The right-hander issued two walks and a hit batter to load the bases with no outs, and Fort Wayne took advantage. Richmond lasted 5 2/3 innings, yielded the four runs on seven hits, walked two, fanned two and plunked two in the loss.

Weeks launched his first professional home run with a one-out solo shot in the fifth, moving his hitting streak to nine games and getting the Cougars within three at 4-1. Then in the sixth Smith went deep to make it 4-2. But the Cougars didn't score again, stranding two in the eighth and ninth against the Wizards' bullpen.

Corey Kluber (1-0) got the win, and Jackson Quezada saved his 20th game. The Cougars' Jason Glushon allowed the game's final run with an unearned mark in the seventh.

The Cougars (11-21), who have lost 13 of their last 17, look to salvage the finale of the series Friday night at 6 CT. Anthony Capra (0-1, 7.50) will be opposed by Cory Luebke (1-0, 2.57) for the Wizards (16-17).
