
Kernels skid reaches six in 6-4 loss to Burlington

July 23, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels current losing streak was extended to six games with a 6-4 loss to the Burlington Bees on Wednesday night at Community Field in Burlington. Kernels starter Esmerlin Jimenez (4-5) allowed six runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out two over 4.1 innings in taking the loss.
The Kernels cut the lead to 6-4 with three runs in the top of the seventh, but that's as close as they could come. Andrew Romine was 3 for 5 with a double, 2 RBI and a stolen base. Hector Estrella and Efren Navarro were 2 for 5 with an RBI, Alex Silversmith was 2 for 3 and Clay Fuller was 2 for 4 as the Kernels outhit the Bees, 11-8.
Ysmael Carmona and Naldy Calderon combined for 3.2 innings of no-hit baseball with five strikeouts in relief of Jimenez. Burlington starter Matt Mitchell (6-8) allowed an unearned run on four hits and struck out three over five innings for the win and Joe Augustine allowed three runs and six hits over three innings but notched his seventh save.
The Kernels and Bees play game two of this three game series at 7 pm on Thursday night from Community Field in Burlington. The Kernels then head to Grand Rapids MI for a three game series with West Michigan before returning to Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium for a 10 game, 11-day home stand with games against Fort Wayne, Clinton and Quad Cities.
