West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Two of the top four pitchers in the Midwest League went head-to-head at Fifth Third Ballpark, but each allowed four runs in the first five innings as the Whitecaps prevailed, 8-5 over Wisconsin. Alfredo Figaro, entered as the league leader in wins (12-2) and ERA (1.83), but earned a no decision for West Michigan as he allowed four runs on a season high ten hits in just five innings. It was his shortest outing since April 4. Michael Pineda was fourth in the league in ERA (2.16) and had a 3-0 lead for the Timber Rattlers going into the Third. However, the Whitecaps rallied for two in the third inning, to cut the Rattlers lead to 3-2. Following the second RBI single of the night for Joe White in the fifth, Wisconsin led 4-2. But Chris Carlson tied the game on a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth inning, Justin Henry broke the 4-4 tie with a bases loaded, two run double down the left field line. Two additional runs scored on the play when left fielder Denny Almonte threw the ball over second baseman Edilio Colina and to the Whitecaps bullpen on the right field side. West Michigan led, 8-4. Colina had two hits and an RBI for Wisconsin. Paul Nardozzi, who was moved out of the Whitecaps starting rotation this week, pitched a perfect top of the sixth in relief to earn the victory and improve to 4-5. Wilton Garcia tossed a scoreless seventh, Rudy Darrow allowed an unearned run in the eighth and Scott Green kept the Timber Rattlers off the scoreboard in the ninth to earn his second save in a week. Ryan Moorer took the loss for Wisconsin with two innings of relief work. Kyle Peter walked three times, had an RBI and three runs scored for the Whitecaps. Henry went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Carlson and Joe Tucker were each 3-for-4. It was the first time in seven games with the Whitecaps that shortstop Brandon Douglas did not record a hit.
