GENEVA, Ill. - Both teams scored four times in their halves of the first inning, but it was the Burlington Bees pulling ahead later in the contest to hold off the Kane County Cougars, 7-6, on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Sherman Johnson and Kyle Johnson drew consecutive walks to start the contest against Jose Rosario (0-3) while Michael Bolaski singled home the former Johnson to bring home the game's first run. Andrew Ray followed Bolaski with a three-run blast to left-center, over the scoreboard, to put the Bees (24-36) up by four.
In the bottom of the first, the Cougars (28-34) quickly answered against Ryan Crowley (6-1). Albert Almora singled with one out and came home on a two-bagger off the bat of Jeimer Candelario. Two batters later, Willson Contreras crushed a three-run homer to even the contest at 4-4.
Rosario couldn't keep the contest tied for long as the Bees reclaimed the advantage in the second. Anthony Bemboom doubled and scored on a Kyle Johnson sac fly. In the third, Ray cracked another home run, a solo shot, while Chevy Clarke singled home Chance Ross to give Burlington a three-run cushion.
Crowley kept the Cougars off the board until the sixth when Reggie Golden doubled to knock in Contreras and scored on a Bemboom passed ball. Both bullpens were solid as Austin Adams and Robert Powell (S, 1) combined to shut out the Cougars through 3.2 innings. Shawn Camp and Brian Smith did the same over four frames against the Bees. Camp was making his first rehab appearance after being sidelined with a sprained toe. He allowed one one hit in one inning while striking out a batter.
The Cougars and Bees will play the second of their three-game set on Wednesday night at 6:30 from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Right-hander Tayler Scott (3-2) will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Alex Keudell (4-2). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
