Peoria Chiefs News Release

Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs didn't trail until allowing four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 6-4 loss to the Clinton LumberKings on Tuesday night. The loss deals a big blow to the Chiefs first half playoff hopes as Peoria falls to 34-28 on the half with five games remaining. One more loss in those final five games will eliminate the Chiefs from a first half playoff spot.

The Chiefs jumped on lefty Tyler Pike in the top of the first to score their first earned run off the LumberKings hurler in three outings this season. Ildemaro Vargas doubled with one out and moved to third on a groundout. Jordan Walton singled to center to score Vargas for a 1-0 lead. Peoria loaded the bases with a Jeremy Schaffer single and Patrick Wisdom walk but Pike struck out Nick Martini to end the threat.

Peoria doubled their lead in the fourth. Schaffer singled to right, moved to second on a groundout and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Martini put the Chiefs on top 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to deep left-center.

Clinton got even in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Ard led off with a double to center against Silfredo Garcia and he scored on a double to left by Patrick Kivlehan. With two outs in the inning, Kivlehan scored from third to tie the game on a fielding error by Wisdom at third base.

The game was still tied into the sixth inning when Jacob Wilson drew a leadoff walk from Pike. Walton sacrificed Wilson to second and Schaffer crushed a two-run homer over the left-field berm for a 4-2 Chiefs lead. The homer, his third in 10 at-bats, was the second for the Chiefs off Pike in the last week.

Leading 4-2 into the eighth, the Chiefs couldn't escape the big inning. Ketel Marte greeted reliever Sam Tuivailala with a single and with one out he moved to third on a groundout to second base. Kivlehan drew a four-pitch walk to put the tying run on base and Tyler Marlette tied the game with a double off the center field wall. Robert Stock relieved Tuivailala and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Clinton took a 5-4 lead on a wild pitch and Brock Hebert made it 6-4 with a single. The Chiefs escaped the four-run inning as Martini threw out Jordy Lara at the plate on the Hebert single.

The Chiefs put two on in the ninth with two outs against Grady Wood as Martini walked and Jesus Montero singled. Wood struck out Jimmy Parque to end the game.

Garcia allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven in the no-decision. Tuivailala (0-2) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning in his second blown save against Clinton this season. Stock allowed one run on one hit, two walks and a wild pitch in 1/3 of an inning.
