West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps were greeted rudely by the Great Lakes Loons on Tuesday night, falling behind by as much as 11-0 before grinding their way to a 13-6 loss in their first visit of the season to Dow Diamond.
West Michigan (30-34) lost for the eighth time in their last 11 games while Great Lakes (24-40) stretched their longest winning streak of the season to six games, a run that began against the Whitecaps last week at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Loons jumped all over Whitecaps' starter Edgar De La Rosa, scoring four times in the first and seven times in the second to chase him from the game after just 1.1 frames. Aaron Miller's opposite-field three-run homer highlighted the first-inning rally while the home team sent 13 men to the plate to blow the game open in the second.
De La Rosa (3-1) was charged with eight runs on eight hits over 1.1 innings for his first loss of the season.
Trailing 11-0 after just two innings of play, the Whitecaps did not go down without a fight.
Jake Stewart and Devon Travis each homered in the top of the third to make it an 11-3 ballgame. In the fifth inning, Jeff Holm's second double of the night drove in three runs as the deficit shrunk to 12-6.
Suddenly within six runs, the Whitecaps reloaded the bases later in the fifth with nobody out and a chance to make it a ballgame. But Adolfo Reina bounced softly back to the mound for a 1-2-3 double play and the Great Lakes bullpen went on to retire the next 13 batters they faced to stymie the comeback bid.
Reliever Geoff Brown (3-1) earned the win for the Loons with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit.
West Michigan gave up 13 runs on 16 hits, both of which were season-highs.
The Whitecaps take on the Great Lakes Loons for the middle game of a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night at the Dow Diamond. RHP Jake Thompson (0-1, 8.22) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against Great Lakes RHP Angel Sanchez (2-6, 4.83). The 'Caps return to Fifth Third Ballpark at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night for the first Tiger Friday of the summer with a visit from Charlie Maxwell. Saturday's action will include games at 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. during a split doubleheader before the final day of the first half on Sunday. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
