Burlington Bees News Release
Andrew Ray belted two home runs, bringing home four runs and the Burlington Bees edged the Kane County Cougars 7-6 on Tuesday evening at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Ray has been a one-man wrecking crew ever since being activated from the disabled list in mid-May and that continued on Tuesday night. Ray hit a three-run home run in the first and a solo shot in the fourth to help the Bees (24-36) end a five-game losing streak against the Cougars (28-34).
Burlington got the scoring started very early on against Jose Rosario (0-3), scoring four runs in the first. Sherman Johnson and Kyle Johnson drew back-to-back walks to start the game and advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Pedro Toribio. Michael Bolaski singled home Sherman Johnson and Ray followed with a three-run blast over the scoreboard in left field. Kyle Johnson's walk extended his on-base streak on the road to 29 games.
Ryan Crowley (6-1) had one of his worst innings of the year, giving back all four runs in the bottom of the first. Jeimer Candalario doubled home a run and Willson Contreras hit a three-run home run of his own to tie the score at four after just one inning.
The Bees offense kept on stinging, scoring one in the second after Anthony Bemboom doubled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Johnson. After taking a 5-4 lead after two, Burlington added two more in the third on a solo home run by Ray and a RBI single from Chevy Clarke that scored Chance Ross.
Crowley settled down to throw four scoreless innings, but ran into some trouble in the sixth. Reggie Golden doubled home Contreras and later scored on a passed ball.
The bullpen was stellar for Burlington, as Austin Adams delivered 2.2 scoreless innings and Robbie Powell set down the heart of the order for Kane County in the ninth to earn his first save.
The Bees will try to pick up the series victory on Wednesday night when Alex Keudell and Taylor Scott will face off for the second time in a week. Scott helped Kane County edge Burlington 3-2 in the last battle between all-stars. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
