Kane County Cougars News Release

LANSING, Mich. - Five different offensive players had a multi-hit game, and three pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts as the Kane County Cougars overcame an early deficit to claim a 7-4 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts on Friday night in front of 3,123 at Oldsmobile Park. The Cougars have won four straight, are 14-1 so far this season and now look for a three-game sweep Saturday.

The Cougars fell behind, 4-0, in the first inning, as starter Scott Mitchinson got off to a rough start. Four straight batters reached before an out was recorded, and the Lugnuts sent eight men to the plate during the frame. But Mitchinson (2-0) settled down the rest of the way, giving up just two more hits and retiring 15 of the final 17 he faced including each of the last 13. He gave up four runs -- three earned -- on six hits over six innings, walked one and struck out six.

After missing scoring chances in each of the first three innings against Luis Perez (0-2), the Cougars managed to break through in the fourth, thanks to run-scoring hits by Todd Johnson, Jonathan Johnston and Matt Ray which made it a 4-3 game. Then in the fifth Jake Smith, Christian Vitters and Walter Correa each cracked an RBI double to give the Cougars a 6-4 lead, though Smith left the game after he suffered an injury running the bases. Corey Brown's long, solo homer in the sixth off Randy Boone accounted for the final run of the night.

Leonardo Espinal worked a scoreless seventh in relief of Mitchinson, and Scott Moore struck out three for a two-inning save, his third. The Cougars (14-1) and Lugnuts (8-7) conclude their series Saturday afternoon at 1:05 CT with Scott Hodsdon (0-1, 3.12) facing Trystan Magnuson (0-2, 3.68).
