Johnson Leads Loons to Victory

After more than a year with the Loons, pitcher Steven Johnson seems to be getting comfortable in Mid-Michigan. The right hander pitched six innings without allowing an earned run and striking out seven with a 7-4 win in front of 4,194 Loons fans at Dow Diamond Friday night.

The Loons scored early and often in the ballgame, beginning with Andrew Lambo's two-run double in the first. The Loons took a 3-0 lead when Preston Mattingly hit a long homerun over the left field foul pole, his second of the season. Travis Vetters and Pedro Baez each drove in runs in the fourth to make it 5-0.

With the game 6-1 in favor of the Loons, Jaime Ortiz drove in the final Loons run with a RBI double in the sixth.

Johnson (1-0) started for the Loons throwing six innings allowing seven hits and one unearned run while striking out seven in picking up his first win of the season. Geison Aguasviva, Miguel Sanfler, and Miguel Ramirez came on in relief to finish out the ballgame for the Loons, who are now tied for first place with the Dayton Dragons in the Midwest League Eastern Division.

Zach Ashwood (0-3) started for Peoria and gave up nine hits and five runs in four innings in picked up the loss.

The Loons improve to 8-6 while the Chiefs fall to 6-9.

This series continues Saturday night in game two of this three-game series against Ryne Sandberg's Peoria Chiefs. Game time is 7:05pm at Dow Diamond. Daigoro Rondon is scheduled to start for the Loons. A fireworks show, powered by Dow Corning, will follow the evening's contest.
