Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, WI -- The Beloit Snappers hit three homers to build a 5-0 lead Friday night at Pohlman Field against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers . Wisconsin rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning, but a heavy downpour forced the tarp to be placed on the field in the bottom of the fifth and the Rattler bats never got another chance to hit. The game was called and Beloit beat Wisconsin 5-3.

The Snappers (6-9) struck early against Rattler starter Edward Paredes. Joe Benson hit the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning over the centerfield wall for a homer. Steve Singleton was next and he blasted a drive over the right field wall for a homer and a 2-0 lead.

Beloit added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Mark Dolenc tripled to knock in the first run of the inning. He would score later in the frame on a wild pitch.

Rattler reliever Keith Meyer entered the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Snappers got to him almost as quickly as they the got to Paredes. Greg Yersich launched a one-out homer to left and Beloit had a 5-0 advantage.

The Rattlers (4-7) broke through against Beloit starter Brian Kirwan with two outs in the top of the fifth. Alex Liddi drove in the first run with a double down the left field line. Gerardo Avila followed with an RBI single to center. A passed ball put Avila in scoring position and Juan Diaz cashed him in with another single.

That single knocked Kirwan out of the game and brought Joe Dunigan to the plate as the tying run. But, as the rain began to fall, Beloit Snapper Steven Hirschfeld retired Dunigan on a grounder to second base.

The rain fell harder during the break between the top of the fifth and the bottom of the fifth. Home plate umpire Max Guyll called for the tarp as the rain pelted down after a 1-0 pitch from Meyer to Chris Parmelee.

The Beloit grounds crew needed help to get the tarp all the way on the field. Both umpires and Timber Rattler manager Terry Pollreisz started to assist, but only after the rest of the Timber Rattler team charged from the dugout to help did the tarp get unstuck and pulled completely over the infield.

But, in the end, the effort did not help. The rain did not let up and after a rain delay of just under 50 minutes the game was ruled official and final.

The loss was Wisconsin's eleventh straight at Pohlman Field. The Rattlers have not won on the home field of the Snappers since April 12, 2006.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday afternoon. Wisconsin sends Nathan Adcock (0-1, 0.82 ERA) to the hill as the starting pitcher. Beloit has David Bromberg as their scheduled starter. Game time is 2:00pm.
