CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars shut out the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-0, in the series opener on Thursday. Alex Real and Nick Gordon each recorded a multi-hit game. Real went 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and a hit by pitch while Gordon finished the evening 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. Cedar Rapids (31-28, 72-57) recorded a hit and stranded a baserunner in every inning except one.
Kane County (40-19, 76-51) struck first with two runs in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles by Henry Castillo and Joe Munoz gave the Cougars runners on first and second to begin the inning. Elvin Soto advanced both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Stryker Trahan gave Kane County a 1-0 advantage with an RBI groundout, bringing in Castillo from third. Quinnton Mack then reached on a Kernels fielding error. The Kernels fielding error allowed Munoz to score, extending the Cougars lead to 2-0.
The Cougars tacked on another run in the top of the third. Ildemaro Vargas led off the inning with a single to center. Colin Bray followed Vargas with a single to right, giving Kane County runners on first and second. Marty Herum then bounced into a double play, moving Vargas to third. A passes ball scored Vargas, increasing the Cougars lead to 3-0.
Kane County extended their lead to 5-0 with two unearned runs in the top of the eighth. Vargas reached on a two-base throwing error to begin the inning. Vargas then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Herum drew a walk. A passed ball allowed Vargas to score from third. A Kernels throwing error following the passed ball advanced Herum to second. Munoz put the Cougars up by five with a two-out RBI single to center.
Randy Rosario (1-5) suffered the loss for Cedar Rapids. Rosario allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out two in six innings. Yorman Landa allowed two unearned runs on one hit and one walk while striking out three in two innings of relief. Zack Tillery yielded one hit and struck out one in a scoreless top of the ninth.
Jared Miller (4-4) earned the win. Miller yielded four hits and three walks while striking out three in five shutout innings. Jose Martinez (4) and Jency Solis (19) each recorded holds out of the bullpen for Kane County. Martinez yielded one hit and a walk in one scoreless inning of relief while Solis yielded one hit in one scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
The Kernels continue their three-game series on Friday v. the Kane County Cougars. First pitch in the middle game of the series is at 6:35 p.m. from Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RHP Sam Gibbons (7-3, 2.72) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while LHP Josh Taylor (3-2, 2.54) counters for Kane County.
