SOUTH BEND, INDIANA - The Loons scored three runs in the third inning and fended off multiple South Bend rallies down the stretch to win 4-3 on Thursday night at Four Winds Field.

The Loons (63-63; 25-33) have won six straight against South Bend and earned their 30th one-run win of the season, the most in the Midwest League. South Bend (58-68; 29-30) has lost three straight overall and falls to 0-6 against the Loons in series-openers this year.

Both starters battled high pitch counts and lasted three innings each. South Bend struck first in the bottom of the second against Loons' right-hander Isaac Anderson. With one out and runners on second and third, lefty Vimael Machin hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Logan Landon made a diving play to register the out and prevent a multi-run hit by Machin.

Michael Ahmed tripled to start the third and scored on Jimmy Allen's RBI single to tie the game. The next batter, lefty Brian Wolfe, gave the Loons the lead on a pull-side RBI double. It extended Wolfe's hit streak to 16 consecutive games, the longest on the team this season and the second-longest streak in the Midwest League this year.

South Bend tightened the Loons' lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, but Wolfe's second RBI base knock of the night reestablished a two-run lead that upheld until late in the game.

When South Bend loaded the bases against lefty Luis De Paula (W, 1-2) with one out, the defense turned its 115th double play of the season to send South Bend back scoreless.

An error sparked what amounted to South Bend's last stand in the eighth inning. Right-fielder Nick Sell dropped a fly ball from Charcer Burks, who later scored on an RBI single by Machin. Right-hander Cameron Palmer struck out Jeffrey Baez to neutralize the threat and maintain a 4-3 lead for the Loons.

Righty Derrick Sylvester (S, 1), in his second game with the Loons since July 9, retired the side in order with two strikeouts to pick up his first save since August 23, 2014 and make a winner out the Loons and De Paula, who earned his first win since May 14, 2014.

The Loons take on the Cubs in a 7:35 p.m. EDT showdown from Four Winds Field on Friday night. Coverage starts at 7:05 on ESPN 100.9-FM. After the three-game series, the Loons return home Sunday, August 30 to meet West Michigan in a 2:05 matinee.

The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
