Lansing Lugnuts News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (26-32, 68-60) lost their eighth consecutive game on the road, falling 7-5 to the West Michigan Whitecaps (36-23, 69-59) in the opener of a three-game series Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Whitecaps piled up 15 hits in the game, including three hits apiece for Joey Pankake, Will Kengor and Arvicent Perez.
Josh Almonte went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Lugnuts, and David Harris went 2-for-4 for the third straight game, but Lansing was unable to complete a rally back from a 7-2 deficit.
Lansing starter Chase Mallard (Loss, 6-6) gave up one run in the second inning, two more in the third and three runs in the fifth.
The 'Caps added a final tally against reliever Mark Biggs, who pitched the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
The Lugs were largely stymied by West Michigan starter A.J. Ladwig (Win, 11-9), who pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) and striking out two.
Almonte delivered an RBI single in the eighth off Adam Ravenelle to draw the Lugnuts within 7-3.
In the ninth facing Dominic Moreno, Chris Carlson shaved the deficit down to three with an RBI groundout. Harris immediately followed with an RBI single, moving to second on a wild pitch. Jason Leblebijian stood at home plate as the potential game-tying run, but Moreno struck him out to end the game.
The second game of the three-game series is set for 7:00 p.m. Friday, with Lugnuts right-hander Starlyn Suriel (8-7, 3.93) starting against Whitecaps right-hander Jeff Thompson (6-10, 3.80).
The Lansing Lugnuts return home on Sunday, August 30th, a 4:05 p.m. Kids Day presented by Delta Dental - Play Catch on the Field before the game, and Kids Run the Bases afterward! For more information, call (517) 485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
