Burlington Bees News Release
(Burlington-IA) The Burlington Bees (56-72) used a pair of two run innings to knock off the Clinton LumberKings (41-87) 4-2 on Thursday night at Community Field.
Zach Houchins notched the Bees' first hit of the game, lacing a single to center to start the bottom of the second inning but would be thrown out trying to go from first to third on a Trevor Gretzky single. After Steven Mateo drew a walk, Clinton starter, Zack Littell struck out the next two hitters, keeping the game scoreless.
Ayendy Perez opened the bottom of the third inning by smacking a single to right and then came home to score on a David Fletcher double to left, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead. After a Taylor Ward single, Zach Houchins hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Fletcher, extending the Bees' lead to 2-0.
Trailing by two runs, Adam Martin led off the top of the fifth inning with a single to right and moved to second base on a Martin Peguero sacrifice bunt. After advancing to third on a ground out, Martin scampered home on a passed ball, cutting the Bees' lead to 2-1. Adam Martin scored once again, tying the game at two on a Bees' error in the seventh inning.
David Fletcher singled to left to start the bottom of the eighth inning. The next batter, Tim Arakawa, lofted a double to left, scoring Fletcher, putting the Bees on top, 3-2. After Taylor Ward grounded out, Zach Houchins reached on an infiled single, putting runners at the corners. Arakawa gave the Bees an insurance run when he scored on a balk charged to Osmer Morales, extending the Bees' lead to 4-2.
Bees' closer Jordan Piche (7) retired the LumberKings in order, earning the save. Gaither Bumgardner (3-0) earned the win while Osmer Morales (1-7) was charged with the loss. The Burlington Bees and the Clinton LumberKings continue their series Friday night at 6:30 when Austin Robichaux makes the start for the Bees against Tyler Herb for Clinton.
