Cottonmouths Defeat Everblades 3-1

ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (0-1) were defeated by the Columbus Cottonmouths (1-0) 3-1 in the Everblades first preseason contest of the year in front of 4,896 at TECO Arena on Friday night. Columbus forward Jerome Bechard netted all three goals for the Cottonmouths.
The Everblades struck first on a goal by forward Marty Johnston at the 16:55 mark of the first period. Johnston sidestepped a Columbus defender and pulled the puck to the backhand and slipped it past Cottonmouths goaltender Matus Koster. The Cottonmouths then evened the contest at 1-1 on a slap shot off the stick of forward Jerome Bechard.
After a scoreless second period the Cottonmouths took the lead for good in the third period after forward Jerome Bechard redirected a Todd Nowicki shot past Everblades goaltender Rob Zepp at the 11:40 mark of the period. Columbus forward Jerome Bechard then notched an empty net goal to complete the hat trick and to give the Cottonmouths the 3-1 victory.
Florida goaltender Rob Zepp (0-1) stopped 29 of 31 shots he faced while Cottonmouths netminder Matus Koster (1-0) stopped 31 of 32 shots. The Everblades were 0 for 4 on the power play while the Cottonmouths were 0 for 4.
Florida takes on the Cottonmouths tomorrow night at 7:30 PM in the second of a two game preseason series between the two clubs.
