Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
DAYTON, Ohio - A night after putting up 12 runs in a shutout victory, Fort Wayne's offense was held in check Thursday evening in a 2-1 loss to the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds) at Fifth Third Field.
TinCaps (15-17, 47-54) starter Tom Cosgrove turned in his third consecutive quality start. The 22-year-old left-hander from Staten Island, New York, kept the Dragons (16-17, 47-54) off the board for five innings. In the sixth, though, Dayton broke the scoring seal with an RBI single from Alejo Lopez, who plated Jeter Downs after he singled and stole both second base and third.
Despite allowing one run, Cosgrove equaled his professional career best for strikeouts in a game with eight - the fourth time he's reached that total this season, and the second outing in a row.
The Dragons added an insurance run in the seventh.
Fort Wayne scored its lone run when down to its final out in the ninth. Second baseman Kelvin Melean drew a two-out walk against closer John Ghyzel and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Shortstop Gabriel Arias then singled to center field to drive Melean home.
Dragons starter Hunter Greene faced the minimum through hitless two innings with four strikeouts, but left the game after two with an upset stomach. Greene threw 30 pitches (22 for strikes), including one in the first inning that was recorded at 102 miles per hour.
