COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps provided solid pitching for the second straight night, but their offensive woes continued in a 2-0 loss to the Lake County Captains Thursday night in front of 8,384 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The loss extends the 'Caps losing streak to three games. West Michigan has gone 22 consecutive innings without scoring a run.

Whitecaps starting pitcher Elvin Rodriguez retired six of the first seven Captains he faced but had to work his way out a bases-loaded jam in the third inning to keep the game scoreless. Josh Rolette gave Lake County a 1-0 lead by roughing up Rodriguez with a solo home run in the fifth inning. In a carbon copy of the previous night, the Captains received their second straight night of strong starting pitching, this time courtesy of lefty Kirk McCarty. McCarty baffled the "Caps in his pitch-count limited 5.2 innings of work, striking out six and walking only one Whitecap.

Lake County's Jose Medina tagged an insurance solo home run off "Caps reliever Billy Lescher in the seventh inning for a 2-0 margin. The Whitecaps managed to load the bases in the ninth inning. Walks to Brady Policelli and Colby Bortles followed by Rey Rivera's hit-by-pitch, but Jordan Pearce struck out to end the threat and secure the Captains victory.

Rodriguez (6-5) hurled six innings allowing just three hits and striking out six Captains in the losing effort. McCarty (4-9) went 5.2 innings, gave up only three singles and picked up his third win of the second half. The Captains advance to 45-57 and 16-16 on the second half while the Whitecaps drop to 49-53 overall and 13-19 in the second half.
