Bees Complete Comeback, But Still Fall 6-5 in Extras to River Bandits

Burlington, IA. - The Burlington Bees (8-21,38-60) were finally back in action after two off days last night to start a seven game homestand. The Bees took on the Quad Cities River Bandits (16-15,56-45), but fell 6-5 in ten innings of play. Luis Garcia (2-2) earned his second victory for his one and two thirds innings pitched out of the bullpen, allowing two runs, one earned on three hits, one walk, and striking out three. Anfernee Benitez (3-1) suffered his first loss, after allowing three runs, two earned on three hits, but did strikeout five in his three innings.

Bandits go ahead in the third

Max Herrmann was the one who started the game for the Bees and the River Bandits finally got to him in the third. Jonathan Lacroix and Michael Papierski hit back to back singles to start the inning, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Scott Schreiber sent a hard grounder to Leonardo Rivas at short, but Rivas misplayed it a little, but he still managed to throw Papierski out at second. However, Lacroix managed to score on the play and Quad Cities took a 1-0 lead.

Costes and Taylor add two more

Miguelangel Sierra led the fifth off with a single and he advanced to second after Papierski lined a single to center for his second hit of the evening. Marty Costes then gave the River Bandits a two out RBI on a single to right, giving them a 2-0 lead over the Bees.

Quad Cities went back to scoring right away in the sixth when Chandler Taylor drove a single to center to score David Hensley, making the score 3-0 Quad Cities.

Bees begin comeback with runs in sixth and seventh

The Bees finally got things started in the sixth inning with a leadoff double from Torii Hunter for his eleventh of the season. Orlando Martinez quickly brought him in a double off the left field wall, giving the Bees their first run, but still trailing 3-1.

After the seventh inning stretch, Alvaro Rubalcaba got the fans back on their feet when he sent a one out double to the left field corner and advanced to third after Lacroix had difficulties handling the ball. Rivas then stepped up and delivered his 27th RBI on a single up the middle, getting the Bees back within a run.

After Alexis Olmeda gave the Bees a runner in scoring position with a double to left, Rubalcaba sent his second hit to center field for an RBI triple, tying the game at 3-3.

Angarita delivers a big blow in extras

Before Angarita came up to bat, Seth Beer put runners at the corners with his second hit of the night and Hensley gave the River Bandits a run on a single to right, putting them ahead 4-3. Alfredo Angarita delivered a huge hit for Quad Cities, lining a two out single just barely in front of Martinez in right for a two run single, putting Quad Cities up 6-3. The Bees managed to drive in two runs of their own in the bottom of the tenth after Olmeda smashed his second homerun to make it 6-5. Rivas managed to draw a two out walk and Hunter singled to advance him to second, but Martinez would go down swinging to end the game.

It was the eight and nine hitters Olmeda and Rubalcaba who were the difference makers in the game last night. Olmeda went 3-5 with a double, a homerun, and finished with two RBI's. Rubalcaba was also 3-5 with a double, triple, one RBI, but did strikeout twice. Orlando Martinez also had a great night at the plate, going 3-6 and driving in a run on his double.

Rodriguez gives up nothing in start

The River Bandits got a great performance from their starting pitcher Leovanny Rodriguez. Rodriguez went the first five innings, allowed just two hits and two walks, while striking out six. It was relief pitcher Cesar Rosado who struggled greatly for the River Bandits. In his three innings, he allowed three runs on seven hits, threw two walks, and two strikeouts. He also suffered his second blown save after allowing the game tying run.

Beer continues hitting streak

Seth Beer has just shined in his time with the River Bandits and has now extended his current hitting streak to eleven games, after his 2-5 performance tonight. Beer is currently hitting .344 and has driven in 14 runs.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will look to bounce back as they will be back in action tomorrow night for game two against the River Bandits at 6:30 pm. The Bees are expected to start Oliver Ortega, who is 3-5 with a 4.34 ERA in ten starts. Quad Cities is expected to go with Jairo Solis who has posted an impressive 2.58 ERA in nine starts but has posted just a 1-4 record.
