Lake County Captains News Release

(Comstock Park, MI) - The West Michigan Whitecaps (13-19, 49-53) have not had an answer for the Lake County Captains' (16-16, 45-57) pitching staff over the last two nights. With a 2-0 victory on Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark, the Captains shut out West Michigan for the second straight game.

Lake County starter Kirk McCarty began the dominant night with 5.2 scoreless innings. McCarty (4-9) eventually earned the win after holding the Whitecaps to just three hits, while striking out six and walking one.

Jonathan Teaney took over for McCarty with two outs in the sixth and needed just one out to finish a combined one-two-three inning. The right-hander then gave up one hit in a scoreless seventh, punctuated by back-to-back swinging strikeouts.

Riley Echols carried the shutout through the eighth with a one-two-three eighth and handed the ball off to Robert Broom. The right-hander sealed the combined shutout with a scoreless ninth, but it did not come easy. Clinging to a 2-0 lead, Broom walked Brady Policelli with one out and, after catching Joey Morgan looking for out number two, walked Colby Bortles and hit Rey Rivera to load the bases. Broom then struck out pinch-hitter Jordan Pearce to end the ballgame and earn his first save.

The Captains scored their lone runs on solo homers. In the fifth, Joshua Rolette snapped the scoreless deadlock with a blast over the right-centerfield wall against starter Elvin Rodriguez. Jose Medina then slammed a home run in the sixth to straightaway right against reliever Billy Lescher.

Rodriguez (6-5) ultimately took the loss, though the right-hander surrendered just one run over six innings. He struck out six, walked three and allowed three hits.

The Captains' pitching staff has not allowed a run in 19 consecutive innings, dating back to Julio Garcia's eighth-inning home run for Burlington in the eighth inning on Sunday. West Michigan has gone 22 straight innings without scoring. The Whitecaps' last run came on a home run by Brady Policelli on Monday at Quad Cities.

Lake County has clinched back-to-back shutout wins for the first time since April of 2017. The Captains will go for the three-game series sweep on Friday night. First pitch at Fifth Third Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
