Cubs Rally Late, But Fall to Lansing 2-1
July 26, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs were just a few steps away from taking the series win over the Lansing Lugnuts on Thursday night at Four Winds Field.
After falling behind to start for the second day in a row, South Bend rallied back with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning to make it a one run game. With the winning run at the plate and a man on first, the Cubs were unable to complete the comeback and dropped game two of the series 2-1.
In yesterday's series opener, neither team plated a run until the Lugnuts scored three in the top of the 7th inning. Similarly tonight, Lansing opened the scoring with two runs off of reliever Manuel Rodriguez in the top of the 6th. Rodriguez took the loss and falls to 2-3 on the season with the two earned runs given up.
South Bend starter Javier Assad kept the Cubs in it for the first five innings. The 20-year-old pitched five frames of scoreless ball and struck out three batters. He takes a no-decision and lowers his ERA to 3.20. The Midwest League All-Star also keeps his record at 5-5 this year.
Elsewhere out of the bullpen, Garrett Kelly and Yapson Gomez worked a combined 3.1 innings of shutout relief. Kelly picked up three strikeouts, while Gomez added one. The game went to the bottom of the 9th with the Cubs down 2-0.
To start the frame, Miguel Amaya reached base thanks to a dropped third strike by the catcher Owen Spiwak. Amaya eventually came around to score when Austin Upshaw drove him in on a RBI single. In this series alone, Upshaw has picked up five RBI, with four of them coming from his grand slam last night.
Lansing closer Matt Shannon finished the game with the save by striking out Clayton Daniel and Rafael Narea for the final two outs. Upshaw represented the tying run at first base, with the winning run at the plate.
With the loss, the Cubs fall to 51-51 overall this season. In the second half, they continue to possess the first playoff spot, but are now 17-16. They will have a chance to win the series tomorrow night in the rubber match against the Lugnuts. Lefty Brendon Little is expected to start for South Bend.
