August 15, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release
NORMAL, IL-Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Wild Things were unable to hold on for the victory against the Normal CornBelters, falling by a final score of 5-3. Michael Schweiss picked up the mound victory while Tim Flight suffered the loss.
The Washington bats wasted no time in gaining the upper hand on Normal in their first hacks when designated hitter Sam Mende doubled to score left fielder Andrew Heck. Center fielder Scott Kalamar, who provided all of the run-scoring hits in Friday's contest, continued his success at the plate with a sacrifice fly to score second baseman Matt Ford for Washington's second run of the inning.
The CornBelters answered the Wild Things in the home half of the first when Santiago Chirino plated Mark Micowski, who led off the inning with a triple. A two-run homer from Aaron Dudley gave Normal the 3-2 advantage after one.
Pitching became the story of the evening after the first, as both Schweiss and Flight refused to allow any gains. Flight retired nine straight batters before allowing a hit in the fourth inning, while Schweiss retired 12 Wild Things before giving up a double to first baseman Jimmy Yezzo in the seventh.
Normal added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits with RBI's credited to Sam Judah and Micowski. Washington responded with a run of their own in their next at-bat thanks to an RBI single from Heck, but the Wild Things were unable to make up any further ground. CornBelters closer Race Parmenter came on for a scoreless ninth inning for his 17th save of 2015.
