
Slammers Break out the Bats to Beat Traverse City 12-2 Saturday

Traverse City, MI The Joliet Slammers (32-45) used a 7-run 5th inning to defeat Traverse City (44-30) 12-2 on Saturday night.
Nate Roberts got the Slammers on the scoreboard early with a solo homer in the 1st inning. He would add a big hit as part of that 7-run 5th with a 2-run single. Mike Garza contributed a 2-run single of his own. Casey Fletcher pushed across a run with a double, a run scored on a walk and Joe Staley singled-in a run as well in the frame. The Slammers finished their scoring for the day on a Fletcher 2-run single, plus a walk and wild pitch in a 4-run 8th inning. The Beach Bums used seven pitchers on the night.
Kevin Walter was the Joliet starting pitcher and lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, with two strikeouts but walked six. Kevin McNorton went 1 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and then Dan Tobik contributed two shutout innings. Sam Moore pitched a perfect 9th to close out the win. Moore had just come off the disabled list on Friday. In other roster moves from Friday, Michael Carden went on the 7-day disabled list and Adam Giacalone decided to retire from the Frontier League. Joliet returns home for a 2-Dollar Tuesday on August 18th at 7:05pm, to open a three-game series against the Florence Freedom. Wednesday the 19th features an appearance by the all-time hit king Pete Rose. He will put on a Slammers uniform to coach the bases for two innings and also sign autographs.
