CornBelters Overcome Early Deficit for 9th Consecutive Win

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, had a rough start to Saturday night ' s game at the Corn Crib but quickly rebounded to win 5-3 against the Washington Wild Things en route to their ninth straight win, tying the season ' s longest win streak.

The Wild Things started the scoring for the night in the first inning when Sam Mende hit a double to bring in Andrew Heck. Scott Kalamar flew out to center field to drive in Matt Ford, making the score 2-0.

In the Belters ' half of the inning, Mark Micowski led off with a triple. In the next at-bat, Santiago Chirino brought Micowski home on a single. Aaron Dudley powered his way to his sixth homer of the year to give the Belters a 3-2 lead.

In the sixth inning, Cameron Monger led off with a walk then stole second to extend his league-leading and CornBelters single-season stolen base record to 31. Sam Judah blasted a double to right field bringing Monger in. Micowski later hit an RBI single pushing the Belters lead to 4-2.

Wild Things starter Tim Flight was relieved in the sixth inning by Steve Messner. Flight (3-7) finished the night with five innings pitched, seven hits, one homer, two walks and five strikeouts.

Belters starter Mike Schweiss (6-7) came off the mound in the seventh inning as Cole Brocker came on in relief. Schweiss threw six and two-third innings, seven hits, two walks and struck out eight.

Race Parmenter came on in the ninth inning and had a 1-2-3 inning recording his 17th save, extending his team single-season record.

The Belters (46-31) lead the Frontier League West by three games over River City and four games over Rockford. The CornBelters face the Wild Things (32-45) in the series finale on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. at the Corn Crib. The Belters send ace Chris Carmain (5-2, 2.72 ERA) to the bump while the Wild Things will start Ernesto Zaragoza (5-6, 3.79).
