Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners rallied all the way back from a 5-0 deficit in the bottom of the eighth to knot the score at 5-5, but again saw the Frontier Greys mount a rally in the ninth inning, falling 8-5 at Rent One Park on Saturday night.
The Greys scored five runs in the second inning against Jarett Miller and the Miners, but Miller settled down after that, allowing just three combined base runners in all of the other innings he pitched aside from those in the second. The right-hander pitched seven frames, walking two and striking out three. The Miners' offense, despite getting a baserunner in every inning against starter Bobby Shore and reliever Ladgie Zotyka, could not score until Southern Illinois mounted a huge rally in the eighth to come back.
Niko Vasquez and Ryan DiMascio led off with walks against Steven Wehr, and after a strikeout, Toby DeMello singled to load the bases before Brian Portelli singled home two runs to make it 5-2. Frank Martinez came up as a pinch-hitter and hit an RBI single up the middle on the first pitch he saw from Chris Rice (3-2) for a 5-3 score. After another single, this one by Adrian English, and a putout on the basepaths for the second out, Michael Earley came through to tie the game on a two-run single to make it 5-5.
But the Miners could not hold the line in the ninth as the Greys, with one out, got four consecutive hits, including a two-run double by Scott Carcaise off Joe Iorio (0-1) to take an 8-5 lead, and win by that final score. Earley had three hits in the contest while Marino, DeMello and Portelli had two apiece. The Miners out-hit the Greys 12 to 11 in the game, but saw their ten-series win streak come to an end with the Greys winning the first two games of the weekend series.
Southern Illinois will look to salvage the series finale on Sunday at 5:05 p.m., with a starter to be determined on the mound against left-hander Max Homick for the Greys.
