
Copeland Goes Seven Strong as 'Birds Win Rubber Game

Batavia, NY - Scott Copeland pitched seven strong innings on Thursday night as the Aberdeen IronBirds defeated the Batavia Muckdogs 7-3.
The IronBirds got on the scoreboard in the first inning. Trent Mummey led off the frame with a single to center. Sammie Starr followed that up with a single of his own. On the play Mummey went from first to third. The throw from center fielder Nick Longmire went to third. Starr attempted to take second on the throw. The third baseman Jon Rodriguez attempted to throw Starr out, but tossed the ball into right field. Starr and Mummey both scored on the error, giving Aberdeen a 2-0 lead.
Batavia chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back singles off of Copeland put runners on first and third with nobody out. Pat Biserta lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, knocking in a run and making it 2-1.
Aberdeen got the run back in the third. Starr reached base on a walk. Kipp Schutz then laid down a bunt single, putting two men on. A batter later, Tyler Stampone knocked in Starr with a seeing-eye-single through the right side.
The IronBirds pulled away in the sixth. Stampone was hit by a pitch to start off the inning. He stole second base. A batter later, Jeremy Nowak knocked him in with an RBI-single to center field. Dashenko Ricardo then worked a walk, putting two on with one out. The starter Zach Russell was taken out in favor of knuckle-baller Houston Summers. Michael Rooney singled, knocking in Nowak. A batter later, Starr singled in Ricardo, giving Aberdeen 6-1 advantage.
The Muckdogs made it a game again in the seventh. With one man out, Jon Rodriguez reached on an infield hit. Biserta doubled in Rodriguez. Roberto Espinoza singled, putting runners on the corners. Jon Edwards grounded into a fielder's choice, knocking in Biserta, and making it a 6-3 ball game.
Copeland exited the game after the seventh. He allowed three runs on eight hits in seven strong innings of work.
Aberdeen tacked on another run in the eighth. Nowak reached on an error on the second baseman Bergman to start off the inning. He advanced to second on a ground out, before being knocked in on a single by Rooney.
Copeland (2-5) got the win. Russell (1-3) took the loss. He allowed six runs, five earned, on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. Russell walked five and struck out six.
The IronBirds return to Aberdeen on Friday to open a three-game set with the State College Spikes. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 PM. The Opening Ceremonies for the Cal Ripken World Series will precede the game.
