FISHKILL, NY --- Robby Price went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double and three RBI, while Wilmer Almonte tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts as the Hudson Valley Renegades beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 8-2 in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium.

The Renegades jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Price got the scoring started with a two-run double centerfield and later scored on a Steve Tinoco RBI single to rightfield. Hudson Valley then broke the game open with four more runs in the fifth off Vermont starter Colin Bates.

Price was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth and later scored on a Phil Wunderlich RBI single, while Tinoco knocked home another run with a sacrifice fly to rightfield. Burt Reynolds greeted reliever Mark Herrera with a two-run triple to close out the four-run fifth, while Price added a sacrifice fly in the sixth for an 8-0 Renegades lead.

Almonte (3-2) allowed just three hits over his 6 1/3 scoreless innings and retired each of the last 14 batters that he faced. That included a stretch of seven straight strikeouts as Almote struckout Russell Moldenhauer and David Freitas to end the fourth, struckout the side looking in the fifth and then struckout the first two batters of the sixth swinging.

Vermont was held off the scoreboard until the ninth inning when the Lake Monsters were able to plate two runs on three hits. Chad Mozingo was hit by a pitch to leadoff the ninth, advanced to second on a single from pinch hitter Wilfri Pena and then scored on a Freitas infield single. Pena later scored on a wild pitch, but the Lake Monsters left the bases loaded as Kevin Keyes and Jason Martinson struckout to end the game as Vermont batters struckout 12 times.

Bates (3-3) was charged with seven runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings for the loss, while Herrera had four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings and Shane Zellers two strikeouts in his one inning as the three Vermont pitchers combined for no walks and 11 strikeouts. After Chad Jenkins walked four Renegades in the first inning in Tuesday's series opener, Vermont pitchers had zero walks and 24 strikeouts over the last 24 1/3 innings.

Brian Bryles was 2-for-3 with two runs for Hudson Valley (27-25), which has won five of its last seven games. Moldenhauer was 2-for-4 and Blake Kelso had a first-inning single to hit safely in his 11th straight game started for the Lake Monsters.

Vermont (28-24) remains one game in front of Connecticut (28-26), who lost 14-0 at Jamestown on Thursday, for first-place in the Stedler Division. The Lake Monsters continue their six-game roadtrip on Friday with the first of three games at Pinckney Division-leading Jamestown (32-21).
