Cool 101.7 Toy Toss A Success

December 2, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, Pa. - This past Saturday, the Johnstown Chiefs partnered with Cool 101.7 and the United States Marines to host their annual Toy Toss against the Cincinnati Cyclones.

As the tradition goes, when the Chiefs scored their first goal all the fans in attendance threw stuffed animals onto the ice to be collected and donated to Toys for Tots. This year, it was Jason Spence's goal at 8:18 of the first period that brought the deluge of fuzzy toys onto the ice.

The Chiefs are proud to announce that 3,126 toys were donated by the 2,144 in attendance at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.

"We are all very happy with the way this year's Toy Toss turned out. Our fans are always so generous when we have events like this, and they really prove that they are the best fans in the ECHL," said Director of Business Eric Wolfgang.

Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which donates toys to underprivileged children whose parents can't afford to buy them Christmas gifts. The program began in 1947 and was founded by Major Bill Hendricks in Los Angeles, California. The first drive in 1947 was a local effort around the Los Angeles area, but was so successful that it became a national effort, and has remained so since, in 1948.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs are back on home ice Wednesday, December 10 to take on the Elmira Jackals at 7:05 PM. The Chiefs will be hosting Ladies' Night with booths set up throughout the arena to cater to their female fans. Great seats are still available, but going fast. You can get yours by calling 814-536-5156 or 1-800-SLAPSHOT.
