Cook's Game Winner Rims Out As Charge Bested By Knicks

November 21, 2015 - NBA G League (G League)
Cleveland Charge News Release

The Canton Charge (0-3), presented by SecureData 365 and powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, fell to the Westchester Knicks (4-0), 86-85, in front of 3,203 fans at the Canton Memorial Civic Center on Saturday night. As time expired, a Quinn Cook game winner found its way halfway down before rimming out, keeping Westchester undefeated.

Canton opened the first quarter with the hot hand, shooting 52% from the field on 11-of-21 attempts. The Charge's activity on the defensive end complimented the offense, forcing five turnovers resulting in eight points. Charge forward Nick Minnerath and guard Quinn Cook combined for 16 points in the opening stanza, leading Canton to a 28-24 advantage after one.

Minnerath continued to carry the offensive load in the second quarter, tallying nine points to give him 18 for the half on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. The Charge wingman chipped in with six second quarter points and center Juvonte Reddic added five points to build a nine point lead with 6:12 remaining in the period. Westchester answered with a strong performance from reserves Wesley Saunders and Kevin Capers, cutting Canton's largest lead of nine down to three at the half, 54-51.

The defensive intensity picked up coming out of the break, with both teams combining for 13 turnovers and shooting a collective 11-of-46 from the field. With good looks at the rim at a premium, Canton's offense leaned on reserve guards JerShon Cobb and Sir'Dominic Pointer - accounting for six of the Charge's 12 3rd quarter points. The Charge defense buckled down to hold Westchester to just 16 points in the third, largely in part to active perimeter defense, limiting Westchester to just 1-of-5 (20%) from beyond the arc.

Clinging to a 67-66 lead entering the fourth, the Knicks and Charge exchanged buckets for much of the fourth quarter. Trailing by eight with 6:17 remaining in the game, the Charge scratched-and-clawed their way back into the game, with Quinn Cook scoring seven of his nine fourth quarter points in the waning minutes of the game. Leading 86-85 with 8.4 seconds remaining, Knicks' guard Travis Trice II missed an 18 foot jumper that found the hands of D.J. Stephens who was promptly fouled. With possession coming out of a timeout, the Charge had 2.9 seconds to win the game. Cook's running jumper rattled in and out and the Westchester Knicks held on for a 86-85 victory, their fourth in as many games.

Minnerath paced the Charge with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, adding seven rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Cook added 16 points and five assists in a team-high 35 minutes. In his first start of the season, guard Michael Stockton tallied 10 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Charge. D.J. Stephens displayed his versatile skillset with eight points, 11 rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Wine and Gold.

Westchester center Jordan Bachynski scored a game-high 21 points for the Knicks in 33 minutes. The 7'2 center also added eight rebounds and six blocked shots. Sean Marshall scored 17 points for the Knicks and guard Wesley Saunders provided 14 points off the bench.
