San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio continued their seven-game series with the Corpus Christi Hooks. San Antonio scored twice in the first inning and never surrendered the lead, as stellar pitching and timely hitting carried the Flying Chanclas to a 3-1 victory.
Ripken Reyes kicked things off with a bang for San Antonio, as he lined a leadoff triple off Hooks starter Julio Robaina in the bottom of the first. Reyes scored on a wild pitch to immediately put the Flying Chanclas up 1-0. Pedro Castellanos then doubled and crossed home on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Johnson, so the Flying Chanclas led 2-0 after the first inning.
Efrain Contreras took the mound as the starting pitcher for the Flying Chanclas, and he cruised through the start of the game. He retired the first 10 batters he faced before Drew Gilbert doubled in the top of the fourth inning. However, Contreras stranded Gilbert in scoring position to keep the Flying Chanclas up 2-0.
Robaina kept the Flying Chanclas quiet until a two-out rally broke out in the bottom of the fifth inning again sparked by Reyes. He doubled and scampered home on a Juan Fernandez single, so the Flying Chanclas grew their advantage to 3-0 after five innings of play.
The Hooks loaded the bases in the eighth inning and got on the board when a catcher's interference was called on Chandler Seagle with Drew Gilbert at the plate. However, Fred Schlichtholz recovered with back-to-back strikeouts to escape the jam and hold a 3-1 lead for San Antonio.
Corpus Christi threatened again in the ninth inning with a single and a walk that put the tying run on base, but Lake Bachar slammed the door, picked up the save and secured a 3-1 victory for the Flying Chanclas.
