Trenton Devils News Release

Trenton, NJ - Shane Connelly stopped 27 shots for his fifth win of the season and J.S. Berube scored two goals, including a power play goal midway through the second period, as the Trenton Devils defeated the Kalamazoo Wings 2-0 in the first of back-to-back games between the clubs.

The first period saw both teams throw a quality rubber at the opposing goaltenders but Shane Connelly and Ryan Nie kept the door shut and the teams skated into the first intermission tied at 0-0, with the Devils killing the Wings' only power play of the night. Nie had more action, facing 11 shots in the opening frame, plus several other scoring chances that didn't produce shots on goal.

The Devils first two power plays of the night were fruitless, but with Jon Landry in the box for holding midway through the second period, Berube managed to poke a loose puck under Nie after Brad Miller's shot from the point got lost within the traffic in front of the net. Berube's goal was his ninth of the season and held up as the game winning goal. Ryan Ginand picked up the primary assist and Miller the secondary helper.

With the Devils carrying a 1-0 lead into the third period, Connelly was forced to make a few key saves to hold off the charging Wings and record Trenton's first shutout of the season. Connelly had to earn the shutout by making his best saves in the final minutes, including a sprawling post-to-post stop with his right pad, to preserve the shutout and earn first star honors.

Berube iced the game by shooting into an empty net with nine seconds left in for his 10th goal of the season and received the second star of the game honor for his work. Ryan Nie finished with 37 saves for the Wings and was awarded the third star of the game.

With the win, the Devils stand at 17-25-1-3 with 38 points, while the loss drops Kalamazoo to 21-20-2-2 with 46 points. Trenton now trails the Kalamazoo by eight points for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoff. The Devils and Wings battle again Thursday night at 7 p.m.
