UNCASVILLE, Conn. (May 14, 2008) - The Connecticut Sun has announced it raised over $29,000 to be donated to the American Red Cross fund for the victims of the fire that destroyed the Peachtree Apartments in Norwich, Conn., in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 26th.

A portion of proceeds from both of the Sun's preseason games on May 4th and 9th, as well as donation boxes that were placed on the concourse at the games, make up the majority of the total. Money was also raised through a rummage sale on May 4th and a silent auction on May 9th. Both events were run in conjunction with the Connecticut Sun Foundation.

"It is a good feeling to give back to those in need," Sun General Manager Chris Sienko said. "Thanks to our fans, the Mohegan Tribe and Mohegan Sun, we are able to give much more than we anticipated."

A check for the donation amount will be presented to representatives from the American Red Cross at the Sun home opener on Saturday, May 17th. Connecticut will take on the Atlanta Dream beginning at 4 p.m.

"We're so pleased to have the support of the Connecticut Sun and their fans in our work with the families affected by the Peachtree Fire," said American Red Cross Charter Oak Chapter CEO Dianne Auger. "We've helped more than 150 people with food, clothing, household needs and medical prescriptions, as well as providing emotional support. Their generosity and support has enabled us to be there for these families with immediate help and we will continue to work with them for as long as they need us."

More than 160 people lost their homes in the fire, which completely demolished the 120-unit Peachtree Apartments on Westledge Drive in Norwich. Those who have been displaced have been aided by groups around the local community as well as the entire state.
